Home Gym
If you are like me and you LOVE to work
out, then it seems like you almost have to have your own home gym. I have been blessed with the room and money
to be able to make my own gym in my basement, but it wasn’t easy. There are many things you will need and many
you may feel that you need in your home gym, some that you can afford but just don’t
have the space for or others that you have the space for but can’t come up with
the money. This post will be mostly on
the basic things that are very necessary in a home, and other things that you
might have to be innovative in.
The number one bare bones things I believe
you need to get first if you plan on making a home gym is flat bench and dumbbells. The ideal thing is to see if you can get a
bench that can change to different angles and either many different weighted dumbbells
or dumbbell bars with interchangeable weights.
Many exercises require a bench and/or dumbbells so this will be
crucial.
If you can afford it, a home gym
machine is very worth to money. A machine
that can do many different workouts like bench press, butterfly press, lat bar pull
down, and maybe even leg levers, would be very useful and save a lot of
space.
If space isn’t a very big issue,
getting a bench press will be very useful.
Bench press is one of the best exercises for your chest and there’s a
reason every gym has one. Another thing
that gets used a lot if you have the room are barbells of many different
weights, great for high pulls, curls, hang cleans, tricep extensions and tons
of others. The last thing that is great
to get if you can afford it is a machine that can do chest flies with a
pulley. Great for chest and usually
great for working other muscles, a chest fly machine is great for home gyms. I for one don’t have the room or the money to
afford a chest fly machine so I found a product made by Gold’s Gym that uses
bungees instead of pulleys for chest flies and it connects to the two ends of a
door, like a Bow Flex.
One thing that is amazing for a home
gym is high ceilings because of the many overhead exercises done in the gym. Also hard surfaces in case of dropped weights
or heavy machines are nice if you are making a permanent place for your home
gym.
One thing you really will regret
doing if you are making a home gym is buying tons of awesome equipment that you
barely have room for. It’s nice if you
can fit a piece of machinery in a workout room but you still need a lot of room
for pushups, sit ups, and crunches, also you need a lot of room for stretching,
performing, and moving your weights to your bench press or other machine. It’s better to have less equipment and more
room than to have a lot of equipment and no room to do other things. Another thing that is bad to do is to spend
tons of money on equipment that you now owe debt or you regret buying, you don’t
need to always buy to biggest most expensive machine to do a certain exercise. I used to be a bit short on equipment and I wanted
so bad to buy a new expensive machine even though I didn’t have the money, but I
looked at the store and found a cheaper alternative that did the same exercise
in less room and for a fraction of the money with the same results. AWESOME,
RIGHT!
